Part bluetooth speaker, part voice-operated bridge into Amazon US's retail and entertainment services, the cylindrical household accessory Echo will start shipping to customers from July 14.
Amazon Echo Priced at $179 in US (that price converts roughly to £114 in the UK, or a little over AU$230 in Australia) , the device answers to the name of Alexa, a title shared with Amazon's web traffic analysis company Alexa Internet.
In addition to playing music from Amazon Prime Music (or Pandora Internet Radio) and ordering goods on command, the Echo can retrieve sports scorelines, find traffic reports, become a control point for smart home devices compliant with Belkin WeMo or Philips Hue protocol, and tell Twitter, Facebook, Gmail and other services what to do.
What is Amazon Echo?
Amazon Echo is designed around your voice. It's hands-free and always on. With seven microphones and beam-forming technology, Echo can hear you from across the room—even while music is playing. Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with immersive sound.
Echo connects to Alexa, a cloud-based voice service, to provide information, answer questions, play music, read the news, check sports scores or the weather, and more—instantly. All you have to do is ask. Echo begins working as soon as it detects the wake word. You can pick Alexa or Amazon as your wake word.
